Company Profile

National Alliance for Children's Grief

Company Overview

The National Alliance for Children’s Grief (NACG) is a nonprofit organization that raises awareness about the needs of children and teens who are grieving a death and provides education and resources for anyone who supports them. Through the collective voice of our members and partners, we educate, advocate, and raise awareness about childhood bereavement. Our Vision is for no child to have to grieve alone. All bereaved children, no matter where they live or their circumstances, should have the support and resources they need to positively adapt to a loss in their lives. The NACG is a nationwide network of professionals, institutions, and volunteers who promote best practices, educational programming, and critical resources to facilitate the mental, emotional, and physical health of children who are grieving and their families. Company History

The National Alliance for Children's Grief (NACG) originated from a meeting at the 1996 National Conference on Loss and Transition, where attendees identified a lack of dedicated resources for grieving children. This led to the inaugural National Symposium on Children's Grief Support in 1997 at Oberlin College, organized by the New England Center for Loss and Transition under Mary Ann and Jim Emswiler. The symposium's success highlighted the benefits of shared knowledge and networking. Subsequent annual symposiums, including the 1998 event hosted by Fernside Center for Grieving Children at Miami University, reinforced the need for a formal national organization. In 2002, discussions resumed about establishing such an entity, with the Judith A. Griese Foundation providing funding and Mary Ann Emswiler leading the initiative. By 2003, during the 7th National Symposium in San Antonio, Texas, a proposal was presented to create the National Alliance for Grieving Children, which has since evolved into today's NACG.
