ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The President is the Chief Executive Officer of the University and is responsible for all operational and strategic aspects of the University, including student recruitment, retention, and graduation; academic policies and programs; state and non-state operating budgets; personnel policies and procedures; external outreach, collaboration and fund raising, etc. The Assistant Vice President of Government and External Affairs assists the President in the performance of the President's duties as they relate to legislative, government, and external affairs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Cultivation of Governmental Officials/Agency Relationships: Supports the Assistant Vice President for Government and External Affairs by managing coordination of all campus activities and relationships with federal, state, and local elected officials and their offices.
Helps manage visits to campus for elected officials and their staff from the university's service area, as well as those who visit from other areas. Assists with developing tour sites, preparing briefing materials, hosting tours, and preparing follow-up materials.
Helps manage legislative and agency visits by university personnel to Sacramento and Washington, D.C., including setting up meetings with legislators and staff, developing issue papers and briefing materials, determining strategy for funding requests, managing visits, and preparing follow-up materials.
Assists the Assistant Vice President for Government and External Affairs in working closely with the college deans and Office of Research, Innovation and Economic Development to manage the university's relationships with a variety of governmental agencies.
Assists in preparing reports, correspondence, and briefing materials on behalf of the president's office relating to local, state, federal, and CSU issues.
Co-hosts governmental officials and their staff members at University events such as award ceremonies, fund-raising dinners, and town hall meetings.
Helps manage campus-based events involving government officials (elected or appointed), and community leaders to ensure appropriate protocol is followed.
Develops relationships with regional economic development agencies and staff to promote the university's effective participation with these agencies in job creation, occupational training, and business development.
Community Outreach Program:
Help manage all aspects of the creation and implementation of an effective outreach program, with attention to the inclusivity of the key stakeholders interested in the future of the Lanterman Development Center (LDC).
Assist with directing the campus and community outreach components related to the various aspects of pre-development assessment and potential future development of the former LDC property, providing leadership to Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) and its stakeholder relations.
Assist with managing the community outreach program and serves as a primary campus resource to direct and coordinate the liaison between various stakeholders and CPP; advises all parties of proposed actions for the LDC property (stakeholders include but are not limited to, CPP's administration, students, faculty and staff); city officials and leaders; elected representatives; economic development groups; organizations; non-profits; and neighborhoods surrounding the LDC; media. Proactively identify and mitigate stakeholder concerns and issues.
Will assess partnership opportunities and initiate and/or further discussions with stakeholders.
Working closely with University Advancement, manages targeted community events that showcase the university's excellence and partnership opportunities.
Serves as a representative of CPP at regional transportation public forums and meetings. Acts as a liaison and provides feedback for various modes of all transportation.
Will determine the appropriate communication and messaging, coordinate, implement, and moderate events to report on CPP activities and to seek stakeholder input.
Will create presentations and print materials to illustrate and inform the relevant CPP key staff members and community stakeholders of the LDC assessment progress, issues and outcomes.
Will meet on a regular basis with the Assistant Vice President for Government and External Affairs, the Chief of Staff, the AVP for Strategic Communication and Marketing, and key CPP staff to advise on Lanterman and other community and corporate relations opportunities.
Will collaborate with the AVP for Research, Innovation and Economic Development in the identification and promotion of faculty-funding opportunities for various research grants.
Helps manage the coordination with the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations as appropriate, to ensure proper contact and follow-up with local and national companies interested in supporting the University.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in political science/government, public administration or related field, or juris doctor degree AND five (5) years of experience in government or community relations, fund raising and resource acquisition at the state and/or federal level. Demonstrated understanding of political processes (local, county, state, and federal). Demonstrated understanding of the relationship of public higher education in California to both state and federal funding processes. Strong organizational skills and excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work with multiple constituencies and demonstrate diplomacy. Demonstrated ability to research, analyze, and recommend strategies for program and policy development. Familiarity and practical experience with event planning, and training/recruitment of volunteers. CA Driver's License with proof of insurance.
Demonstrated understanding of university (or higher education) protocol related to contact with governmental officials and their staff. Working knowledge of state and federal budgetary and appropriations processes. Experience working in a multi-disciplinary academic environment. Master degree in public policy or related field.
