Founded in 1909, Cardinal Gibbons High School was the first Catholic high school in Raleigh, North Carolina. Named in honor of Cardinal James Gibbons who served as Bishop of Raleigh in the late 1800s, the school has a student body of approximately 1,550, an alumni base of more than 7,000, and a staff of 150. Cardinal Gibbons is known for its welcoming community and sense of family. The School creates an environment where students can achieve their highest goals in academics, athletics, and fine arts programs, while serving their communities through outreach and growing in their Catholic faith.
Located on 36 acres in the state’s capitol, Cardinal Gibbons enjoys strong connections to the major cities of the Triangle—Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill and its many other municipalities through local churches, partner middle schools, universities, and its own families of current students and alumni.
Reporting directly to and working in partnership with the Head of School, the Director of Advancement is an integral member of the senior administrative team, bringing a philanthropic lens to the strategic conversations of the school. The Director of Advancement will lead a structured, intentional fundraising program, managing the overall portfolio of donors, as well as his or her own portfolio, while strategically leveraging the relationships within the school community. The Director will focus on strengthening the culture of philanthropy, implementing strategies to both broaden the donor base and to move current donors to deeper levels of investment in the school.
The Director of Advancement will be entrusted with the following key responsibilities:
Leadership - Responsible for building an overall philanthropic culture rooted in a spirit of gratitude and in recognition of the important role Cardinal Gibbons plays in forming leaders in faith, service, and leadership. The Director of Advancement will approach this work through the lens of each constituency of the school including the Board, educators, current parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, and the Diocese. As a member of the senior administrative team, the Director will bring a philanthropic lens to the strategic discussions that will set the overall course for the school. The Director supports the Board of Trustees, prepares regular Advancement reports to the Board, and attends Board meetings.
Resource Development – Directs and executes a strategic, comprehensive annual development plan focused on relational giving across all constituencies. Leads the ongoing growth of annual, capital, and endowed resources through outright and planned gifts, helping donors grow from initial donations to deeper investments overtime. Analyzes renewal, retention and acquisition rates annually using data and predictive models to set goals for overall giving and participation year over year. Develops automated and personal solicitation and stewardship strategies as a part of the comprehensive, annual development plan. Trains and supports advancement staff, senior staff leaders and/or volunteers in fundraising best practices to maximize a relational approach to philanthropy.
Donor Data – Oversees the integrity of all donor records in Raiser’s Edge in partnership with the Advancement Data Coordinator. Manages the overall portfolio of donors using Raiser’s Edge to record call notes, follow up steps, proposals, etc. Reviews weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual fundraising reports to ensure compliance with all solicitation strategies, stewardship protocols as well as all donor and business office policies. Mines data regularly to inform strategy. Assists with annual audit as requested.
Communications and Marketing - Works closely with the Director of Communications and the Director of Admissions to develop an overall communications and marketing plan for the school, ensuring the consistent delivery of philanthropic messages in alignment with the overall communication and marketing strategy. In partnership with the Director of Communications, sets an annual calendar of advancement communications with agreed upon deadlines for delivery.
Staff Leadership - Maintains a culture of teamwork and accountability throughout the department. Conducts annual performance reviews and coaches the Associate Director for Alumni Advancement and the Advancement Data Coordinator throughout the year. Helps administrative team members align his or her skills and purviews to promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the school. Engages educators in appropriate ways that promote the school’s philanthropic culture. Maintains strong relationships with colleagues and constituents across the Diocese, fostering a spirit of collaboration. Manages the department budget.
Engagement - Oversees engagement strategies for parents, alumni, and alumni parents, offering strategic leadership to the Cardinal Gibbons Family Association.

Proven leader (10+ years) of a strategic, comprehensive fundraising program with success directly soliciting major ($50,000+) gifts, ideally in a school setting
Excellent philanthropic strategist, blending the art and science of development with an entrepreneurial style
Exceptional communicator with an ability to articulate, verbally and in writing, the value of the Cardinal Gibbons experience
Inspired and inspiring fundraiser who is passionate about relationship-based fundraising
Natural connector with a high social and emotional IQ
Champion for Cardinal Gibbons’ commitment to racial justice and equity as an institution that strives to be inclusive and supportive all students, families, and alumni

Skilled data tactician with a solid understanding of the key role that data serves in creating development strategy with familiarity with Raiser’s Edge preferred
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with CFRE or ACRFE preferred
Experience fundraising within the structure of an umbrella organization such as a Diocese, higher education, or a national organization preferred
