As a professional staff, reporting directly to the Executive director of the Bangor Humane Society and working closely with the BHS Board of Directors, the Director of Development will coordinate all aspects of fund development; provide strategic direction and support in the creation and management of a comprehensive development program. A key position in the organization and as a member of the senior management team, the Director will have the opportunity to expand the individual, corporate and foundation donor base.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Develop and execute BHS’ annual fundraising plan that includes strategies for the organizations sustainability.
Support and partner with the BHS Executive Director, Board members and other volunteers in fundraising-specific tasks.
Identify, research, qualify and engage new and existing sources of potential support.
Personally cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors (including individuals, foundations and corporations).
Create and execute a strategy for a large sustained base of annual individual donors.
Oversee and formalize the BHS Legacy Society - planned giving program.
Write grant proposals and further develop the BHS’ foundation grants program and overall strategy for foundation giving.
Track proposals and reports for all foundation and corporate fundraising.
Oversee Development department special events, including but not limited to, Paws on Parade.
Manage BHS’ fundraising database, Raiser’s Edge.
Develop and oversee comprehensive marketing and public relations strategy
Provide oversight for third-party fundraising events and offers.
Develop and manage the departmental budget.
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience/education in development, marketing and public relations, Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) credential a plus.
Minimum of three years’ experience managing and directing a comprehensive giving program with an emphasis on major gifts.
Demonstrated track-record of soliciting and obtaining major gifts including grants, individual and corporate giving. .
Planned Giving experience preferred but not required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
Staff management experiences a plus.
Experience setting and managing a budget
Enthusiasm for the mission of BHS.
High degree of initiative and ability to work alone and as part of a team; strong time management skills.
Ability to work flexible hours, including some evening and weekends.
Reliable transportation and ability to travel locally for events and meetings.
