The Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) is a rapidly growing network of more than 240 nonprofit news organizations across the U.S dedicated to serving the public’s need to stay informed and engaged. One aspect of INN’s mission is to develop business leadership and sustainability strategies for the national member network. To that end, INN, with funding from Knight Foundation, is building a hub for shared major gifts services and capacity-building resources. to raise the level of individual major gift fundraising across the nonprofit news sector.
As a new area within philanthropy, news nonprofits are seeing strong growth in individual giving and high public interest, but need to build skills and tools to leverage the momentum and related initiatives, such as NewsMatch, a national matching gifts campaign that is expanding the national base of news supporters and raised more than $7 million for INN members last year.
The role of the Major Gifts Program Director is to develop and execute the key strategies of the INN Major Gifts Initiative, a three-year endeavor to advance the skills of the INN member network in major donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and donor stewardship to ensure long-term sustainability.
The Major Gifts Program Director (MGPD) will design and coordinate the delivery of major gifts programs and services intended to expand the fundraising capacity at several levels within the INN member network: start-ups and early stage; growing newsrooms and well-established organizations. The MGPD will encourage the use of best practices in major gift fundraising, strengthen the culture of fundraising in the field and build INN’s professional support structure for development staff working to fund quality journalism. Additionally, the MGPD will develop and track success metrics to meet organizational performance goals, evaluate and guide programming.
