Reporting to the Vice President of University Advancement, the Executive Director of Development Programs serves as a key member of the Advancement leadership team and active participant in making strategic decisions affecting the central fundraising programs and comprehensive campaign operations for California Lutheran University. The Executive Director is responsible for supervising the fundraising activity through major gifts, planned giving, and annual giving. The Executive Director will direct and implement campaigns by collaborating on strategy and milestones. The Executive Director will work with executive leadership, peers, and partners within the organization and across the university to assure a united, organized effort. The Executive Director will carry a limited major gift portfolio of individual, corporate, and foundation prospects as directed by the Vice President of University Advancement.
Provide results-oriented strategic leadership and direction to gift planning, annual giving & student programs, and corporate/foundation relations to drive increased development activity and total contributions. E
Effectively lead change initiatives affecting staff, with emphasis on programmatic growth and performance. E
Work closely with University administrators and volunteer leadership to accomplish stated fundraising goals, particularly identification of new major gift prospects and donors. E
Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects of $25,000 and above. E
Supervise front line fundraising staff. E
Utilize industry-wide concepts and best practices in campaign planning, strategy, and implementation. Reinforce appropriate use of gift/endowment agreements, donor records and timely reporting in the University’s donor database (Raiser’s Edge). E
Assist the Vice President of University Advancement as a champion of the vision for fundraising to support strategic fundraising priorities. E
Establish and manage campaign budgets. E
Collaborate with the Vice President of University Advancement, Executive Director of Advancement Services, and other members of the Advancement Leadership Team to develop and manage the campaign pyramid to guide fundraising strategy and activate meaningful volunteer engagement. E
Work with Cal Lutheran staff and key campus leaders to develop an overall strategic plan for the fundraising programs that engage Deans, Program Directors and the Provost, along with other Vice Presidents as appropriate. E
Build, maintain and nurture a high functioning team in line with the Cal Lutheran budget and growth plans. Partner with the Cabinet/Human Resources as necessary to invest in and engage the team. E
Foster a culture of Philanthropy and campus-centered fundraising. E
Establish, delegate, communicate, monitor, and reinforce staff assignments, accountabilities, performance expectations and goals. Accurately and effectively implement a Performance Management Program by providing ongoing feedback and recognition as well as timely formal performance appraisals to staff to inspire accountability, success, continuous improvement, and professional growth. E
Support a service-oriented atmosphere in accordance with Cal Lutheran’s mission and values. Model ethical leadership. E
Serve as a mentor and role model for all staff, exemplifying the Cal Lutheran mission, vision, values, and commitment to diversity and donor stewardship. E
Travel throughout the United States and possibly abroad to call on donors and prospective donors and represent Cal Lutheran. E
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Any combination equivalent to: A Bachelor’s degree and 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience higher education development with successful administration of fundraising programs, capital campaigns, major gifts fundraising and demonstrated success in the supervision of professional fundraising staff. High energy and passion for the mission of Cal Lutheran with tangible experience expanding and cultivating existing donor relationships over time with progressive experience managing campaigns and an extensive volunteer base.
Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE)
10 years of progressively responsible experience in Advancement (development) and Advancement management
5 years of leadership and management experience at a director level or higher
Experience with CRM Software
