Department, University, and Community description:The NIU Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) organization that provides overall leadership, coordination, and service for all development activities throughout Northern Illinois University by partnering and collaborating with colleges and divisions campus-wide. The vision of the NIU Foundation is to develop, support, and encourage a culture of giving throughout the NIU community that will allow it to flourish and accomplish its’ goals. Northern Illinois University is a comprehensive research university offering programs from the baccalaureate through the doctorate. Colleges include business, education, engineering and engineering technology, law, liberal arts and sciences, health and human sciences, and visual and performing arts. On-campus enrollment is approximately 18,000 students. The university also offers more than 200 extension courses each semester to students in communities throughout northern Illinois.
The main campus is located in DeKalb, 65 miles west of Chicago's "Loop" and 40 miles southeast of Rockford. In addition to the main campus, NIU has three education centers in Hoffman Estates, Rockford, and Naperville. DeKalb/Sycamore, with a population of about 50,000, is a modern paradox, a rural/urban community. It is simultaneously recognized for its manufacturing and rich farmlands. Function of the Job
The Director of Strategic Advancement is the principal administrator of all strategic fundraising initiatives for the Division of Advancement and works within the Gift Planning Team to identify, solicit, and steward a portfolio of prospects. The primary responsibility is to develop and manage all fundraising initiatives, including but not limited to: multiple major fundraising galas annually, University Presidential dinners, and campaign-related initiatives focusing on high wealth individuals. This position is responsible for delivering a fundraising target resulting in a net revenue of $1M annually, and therefore is critical to the overall Divisional fundraising campaign.
Duties and Responsibilities
This position provides strategic oversight for the development, marketing, and execution of all campaign-related initiatives including campaign kick-off, campaign close, and blitz initiatives locally, regionally and nationally. This position ensures these initiatives focus to net revenue of $1M annually. This position monitors and controls departmental budgets, and has authority to negotiate contracts.
This position’s responsibilities focus on enhancing the Foundation’s prospect pool and donor base before, during and following the fundraising campaigns, and requires continuous interaction with alumni, donors, prospects, deans, and boards. As such, this position requires excellent communications skills, the ability to relate complex strategies to every constituent, and the ability to oversee multiple functions at a highly professional level.
This position operates under the overarching goals of presenting the Foundation’s mission effectively, and developing and maintaining goodwill with current and potential donors, friends and associates of the Foundation and University.
Five (5) years major event planning/management experience is required, including administrative oversight responsibilities.
Five (5) years of experience with successful major gift solicitation.
Demonstrable portfolio of and experience designing and executing signature events that raised significant net revenue.
Demonstrated exceptional writing skills, strong oral communication with group presentation skills.
Demonstrable commitment to the highest standard of ethical and professional conduct in accordance with the CASE Statement of Ethics, the Association of Fundraising Professionals Code of Ethical Principles and Standards, and The Donor Bill of Rights. (Membership not required.)
Demonstrably strong work ethic and entrepreneurial mentality. A high-level of integrity, focus and commitment to achieve ambitious goals is essential.
Familiarity with the “moves management” approach to major gift fundraising.
Knowledge and understanding of the allocation of budget resources to provide and promote the highest levels of productivity in development initiatives is required.
Experience working within a matrixed organizational structure where performance responsibilities are evaluated in different divisions.
The ability to think critically and strategically; capable of taking responsibility for specific goals within designated time frames. Capable of coordinating multi-task initiatives to successful conclusion.
A flexible attitude and clear ability to modify and adapt as situations
Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in a collegiate environment.
Advanced degree and/or professional designation (CFRE).
Capital campaign experience in higher education is highly desirable.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office software and familiarity with appropriate foundation fundraising tools. Knowledge of computerized systems of donor record keeping, data tracking of prospects, and donors.
Commitment to the ideals and culture of higher education.
A proven ability to build strong relationships anchored in trust and integrity.
The ability to work effectively in a group/team environment to assist in intra-divisional initiatives
