The University of Virginia is seeking a Director of Major Gifts to work on behalf of the UVA School of Architecture. The School of Architecture Foundation exists to support and foster the study and teaching of architecture, landscape architecture, architectural history, and urban and environmental planning at the University of Virginia, and to aid, strengthen, and extend in every proper and useful manner the work, services, and objectives of the School of Architecture. As part of its Advancement team, the Director of Major Gifts will manage a portfolio of donors and prospects. The selected candidate will identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors and prospects believed to be capable of making leadership and major gifts ($100,000+) in support of the School and its $65 million campaign goal as part of the University of Virginia's Honor the Future campaign. The incumbent will be expected to meet defined visit, proposal, and solicitation goals, and to work closely with team members, volunteers, and other stakeholders to achieve those goals. The incumbent will attend fundraising events and assist with donor stewardship.

  • Develop and manage a portfolio of existing and potential individual donors; develop, cultivate, and steward relationships with existing donors leading to leadership and major gift solicitations; qualify, cultivate, and solicit appropriate prospects.
  • create and implement donor strategies that include prospect development, preparation of written materials, cultivation visits and events, direct solicitation, and solicitation in tandem with volunteers and other staff.
  • Solicit annual fund, major gifts, planned gifts and reunion gifts with the goal of meeting Campaign goals and increasing alumni donors' overall lifetime giving.
  • Maintain records of visits, solicitations, and cultivation status in accordance with system requirements and departmental protocols.
  • Recruit and work with volunteers to achieve Campaign engagement and financial goals.
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with faculty and staff at the School of Architecture and with other development professionals at the University.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

  • Minimum Requirements:

    Education: Bachelor's degree
    Experience: At least three years of previous fundraising experience.
    Licensure: None

    Physical Demands:

    This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree is required with at least five years of direct fundraising experience.
  • Interest in architecture, planning or other programs at the School of Architecture is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully solicit and secure major gifts ($100,000 up to $1,000,000) is required.
