The Council of the Great Lakes Region (CGLR) is a binational organization that is incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in Canada and in the United States as a 501c6 and a separate 501c3.
Launched in 2013, its mandate is to create a stronger, more dynamic culture of collaboration in harnessing the Great Lakes Region’s economic strengths and assets, improving the well-being and prosperity of the Region’s citizens, and protecting the Great Lakes for future generations.
It achieves this mandate through policy research and programs, connecting leaders from all levels of government, industry, academia and the non-profit sector, and acting as a strong voice for the Region’s varied economic, social and environmental interests.
CGLR is in the process of preparing and launching a new four-year strategic plan to guide its growth. As a result, CGLR is currently seeking an experienced Development Professional on a contract basis to write and implement the organization’s first fund and membership development strategy, and to execute the strategy in collaboration with the President and CEO.
In partnership with the President and CEO, this individual will be responsible for leading CGLR’s revenue generating functions, both strategically and operationally. This includes providing leadership in the creation, implementation, management, and evaluation of a fully integrated fund and membership development program that builds CGLR’s base of members, sponsors, and grantors, increases year-over-year revenue, and enhances the organization’s long-term financial sustainability in Canada and the United States.
This position will be managed via in-person or Skype meetings, phone calls, and electronic communication.
The geographic territory includes the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec and the following Great Lakes states – New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Engaging the two federal governments in Washington, D.C. and Ottawa, Canada will also be necessary.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Develop, implement manage, and evaluate the overall fund and membership development strategy including corporate and foundation support
Ensure all development work is aligned to CGLR’s brand and marketing strategy, maximizing public awareness and profile building opportunities for the organization
Develop an annual income and expenditure budget of CGLR costs related to fund and membership development
Research, develop a ‘case for support’ and proactively identify members and prospective sources of funding support
Write and submit grant and sponsorship proposals, manage the proposal development process, devise strategies on approach, track opportunities and provide follow-up and stewardship
Develop online development strategies, campaigns and calls to action, implement and monitor metrics and analysis of mobilization campaigns
Plan and manage donor and member administration activities including: cultivating relationships with constituents (donors, members and sponsors), developing and overseeing recognition and benefits programs, maintaining comprehensive contributor files, and oversight of receipting where applicable
Monitor and evaluate all fundraising and membership recruitment and retention activities to ensure that development goals are being achieved
Working with volunteers as well as the Board of Directors, including the Board fundraising committee, in development-related projects
Prepare regular reports on progress, budgets, related to fundraising and the management of fund development activities
Other duties as assigned and required
Qualifications and Experience:
5+ years of progressive experience in fundraising and membership development
University degree or equivalent combination of training and experience
Exceptional communication skills in English; written and spoken are essential
Fluency in French a major asset; written and spoken
Proven track record of development success
Experience in proposal writing, sponsorship, special events, and donor cultivation
Be a “self-starter” and goal driven to initiate applications, appeals and solicitations
Strong interpersonal, motivational, presentation and networking skills
Solid administration, coordination, budgeting and management skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and fundraising software tools
Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) designation is an asset
Willingness to travel
Understanding and appreciation of CGLR’s mission and the ability to articulate its values and vision passionately to internal and external stakeholders
