The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for facilitating gifts of $10,000+ to further The Arc’s important mission of promoting and protecting the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The Major Gifts Officer is a member of The Arc’s Development, Marketing and Communications Group, and is responsible for acquiring, maintaining, and increasing funding from major donors through effective identification, cultivation, and solicitation. The focus of this position is to develop long-term relationships with major donors built on a firm understanding of donor interests and values and to engage donors more deeply in the work of The Arc. The Major Gifts Officer will be a key member of the Individual Philanthropy team working closely with other members of this and the corporate/foundation team, program staff from The Arc’s national office, chapter leaders, The Arc leadership, the Board of Directors, and volunteer leaders as well as major donors.
This is a newly created position at The Arc, and the Major Gifts Officer will be expected to lead The Arc in growing its philanthropic opportunities. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
Leads the effort to acquire, qualify and cultivate new and existing major gift (including planned gift) opportunities for The Arc.
Develops, manages and executes a strategic plan designed to raise funds from major gift donors, including implementing individualized solicitation plans.
Manage a portfolio of qualified prospects, acting as primary relationship manager for individual major gift donors.
Tracks interactions with donors in the Raiser’s Edge database and maintains the integrity of those records, including key documents and reporting deadlines.
Researches individuals and family foundations to identify potential new funders for The Arc.
Communicates with major gift donors in person, by phone, emails, written materials, and social media, and travels to meet with donors nationally as required.
Crafts plans for stewardship of major gift donors and closely monitors the acknowledgement and recognition process to ensure that donors are properly and appropriately acknowledged.
Works with the Director, Individual Philanthropy to complete internal reports on the team’s progress, accomplishments, and budget.
Other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility and requirements of the job.
Minimum bachelor’s degree is required. Having Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credentials is helpful, but not required.
Has four to six years of high-level experience in development and has demonstrated success in major gift fundraising.
Must have exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with donors and prospective donors.
Must have excellent organizational skills with particular attention to systems, processes, and details, and possess the capacity to multi-task.
Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment as well as autonomously to meet fundraising goals.
Must be based in Washington, DC and have the ability and willingness to travel nationally when required.
Must be knowledgeable in planned giving and fundraising best practices.
Must demonstrate a commitment to and a passion for the work of The Arc.
