The Manager, Major Gifts is responsible for generating philanthropic support from individuals, corporations and foundations at the major gifts level and leading all fundraising activities in keeping with VON Canada’s fund development framework
Develops and manages a major gifts fundraising program
Develops short-term and long-term goals and objectives for ongoing cultivation of donor and major gift prospects
Conducts research and develops prospect profiles
Identifies and qualifies prospects, creates plans for the cultivation and solicitation of prospects
Ensures recognition and stewardship of donors
Solicits major gifts with the primary purpose of maximizing donations from individuals, corporations and foundations
Builds a volunteer team to assist with identifying prospects and with solicitation activities.
Uses data management system (Raiser’s Edge) to ensure the accurate and timely recording and reporting of data
Works as a core member of an extended fund development team, acting as an advisor on best practices in major gift fund development
Promotes the strategy of VON and the role of the organization community care provider to all stakeholders and staff
Prioritizes and ensures alignment of emerging opportunities in the community with VON’s strategic plan
Provides leadership in navigating the requirements and complexities of unionized and non-unionized environments
Coaches, advises, motivates, and provides leadership to staff; creates a positive workplace for staff
Promotes the Lean team management approach to ensure a common paradigm of management and discipline practices
Ensures there are mechanisms for all staff to come together to hear organizational news and to provide feedback on what is working and what is not working
Ensures all Districts have a plan to complete performance development and learning plans with all staff
Promotes common approaches to orientation, learning, motivating, recognizing and supporting staff when achieving organizational goals; such as meeting or exceeding KPIs, meeting or exceeding milestones
Develops effective internal relationships across departments to facilitate employee giving campaign, employee education sessions and manage department fundraising events
Provides leadership and commitment to building client and family engagement and following accreditation Canada Standards
Provides leadership in the promotion of a safe and healthy workplace ensuring workplace conduct and activities are in accordance with the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, that KPIs related to safety are regularly reviewed by management, that appropriate investigations occur when needed, and plans to address issues are created and acted upon
Promotes the use of technology-based systems for the capture, transformation and distribution of knowledge
Forges affiliations with VON staff across functional departments and in regional sites by providing consultation, coaching and support as a team resource within the fund management function
Works with internal/external partners, including community boards, in regions and in functional departments on regional or national projects
Post-secondary degree in business, public administration or other relevant field of study.
Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation an asset.
Minimum five (5) years fundraising management experience is essential.
Proven experience managing a major gifts portfolio.
Experience in planning and executing significant fund development programs and campaigns in collaboration with volunteers.
Credible expertise in the full spectrum of fund development with strength in establishing and growing Major Gifts Program.
Proven track record of attracting, retaining and deepening the engagement of donors.
Experience working in an organization with a national/local dynamic.
Experience working in the health care and/or community support services sector an asset.
Extensive experience with Blackbaud products is required.
Knowledge of fundraising processes, best practices and current industry trends
Exceptional interpersonal skills including the ability to relate effectively with people at all levels (internal and external)
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Strong work ethic, professional and personal integrity.
Literate in computer programs including the Microsoft office suite, Raiser’s Edge, and Adobe
Must be fully conversant with CRA requirements as they apply to registered charities
Must have personal vehicle and possess both a current driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance
A current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check is required upon the start of your employment
A vulnerable Sector Search and/or Child Abuse Registry Check may be required
Ability to speak French is an asset in French Designated areas
