Senior Director of Development for the WPRCI Cancer Institute
UAMS is seeking an engaging and effective leader for the position of Senior Director of Development, to partner with an energetic, visionary leadership team, working closely with the director of the Cancer Institute, Lance Burchett, Vice Chancellor of Institutional Advancement; and Brigitte Grant, Senior Associate Vice Chancellor of Development (SAVC) in supporting a world-class cancer research and treatment center and taking the philanthropic support of the Cancer Institute to the next level. The successful candidate will be a seasoned, metrics-driven leader with an affinity for Cancer Institute fundraising to extend the mission of UAMS and the Cancer Institute. The ideal candidate will demonstrate superior relationship-building skills, expertly cultivating and securing major gifts; be experienced at motivating and managing a high-performing team of both employed staff and volunteers; effective in navigating the complexities of a large hospital system or academic medical center; and graciously engage with patients and families.
The Role of the Senior Director of Development
The Senior Director of Development provides leadership, direction and coordination of cancer focused fundraising initiatives across the campus and state. Her/his focus will be high-level relationships with the Cancer Institute’s benefactors and prospects. Under the direction of the SAVC, the senior director will be required to secure major and principal level gifts. The senior director of development will identify prospective donors and funding sources and develop cultivation and solicitation plans. The incumbent will serve as a key member of the Institutional Advancement principal gifts team. When appropriate, the senior director will provide guidance and supervision to assigned development and advancement staff. Additionally, the director will establish and maintain strong and effective relationships with Institutional Advancement and other UAMS colleagues in medical departments, institutes and central development to ensure effective collaboration and synergy in achieving the university’s key fundraising goals and objectives.
Strategize, plan and solicit gifts in excess of $50,000. Manage an ongoing portfolio of 120+ prospects and donors. Successfully engage with donors in cultivation, solicitation and stewardship demonstrated through attainment of monthly and annual metrics for in-person contacts, proposals and funds generated. Performance targets will be set by the Institutional Advancement in consultation with the director of the Cancer Institute.
Work closely with major gift colleagues to develop principal gift level moves management strategies culminating in solicitations of seven-figure gifts and higher.
Work with UAMS and unit leadership to identify programs for which private funds can be raised, to identify potential sources of private gift support and to recommend appropriate strategies to secure major gifts, including with grateful patients and families.
Provide assistance to leadership and other staff members in identifying, recruiting, training and motivating volunteers to assist in the identification and solicitation of major gift prospects. Draft proposals and briefing materials for major gift solicitations personalized for donor interest, working closely with the SAVC.
Knowledge of and compliance with Institutional Advancement policies, procedures and record-keeping requirements, including contact reports and moves management reporting.
A Baccalaureate degree in business, marketing, communications, public relations or related field plus 6 years of demonstrated successful experience in major gift fundraising and fundraising management, with a strong preference for experience in higher education or health care. Outstanding oral and written communication skills are necessary. An individual who is highly organized, creative, energetic, and one who exhibits character, excellent judgment and personal integrity is seen as an ideal candidate. The individual selected will be a team player, able to work all levels with multiple constituencies, both internal and external. CFRE and/or an advanced degree are preferred. Knowledge of current tax laws and other laws relating to gifts, solicitations and fundraising in general is a plus.
