Position Summary: The Director of Philanthropy will advance the culture of philanthropy by guiding and implementing the organization’s strategic fundraising to include: annual giving, major gifts, corporate gifts, and planned giving. This individual works closely with the Vice President of Development, the Chief Executive Officer, Executive leadership and Board members to identify, cultivate and provide stewardship for major donors. This individual will diversify support for the Mental Health Center of Denver through engagement of Denver’s diverse philanthropic communities.
Essential Job Functions:
Enlist support for fundraising efforts by engaging the Board of Directors, executive leadership, program managers, program staff, volunteers and the people we serve.
Provide strategic consultation, support and ideas to the Board of Directors to promote fundraising efforts and corporate sponsorships.
Advance a culture of philanthropy by interfacing and engaging program staff within the organization to develop and enhance support for fundraising opportunities.
Lead coordination with Development staff to promote fundraising/marketing efforts.
Implement strategies to identify, cultivate and sustain individual multi-year donors committed to the mission of the organization using both the Benevon/Raising More Money approach complemented by other accepted fundraising strategies.
Create plan to increase number of multi-year donors and provide ongoing stewardship with all donors.
Guide communication and cultivation efforts to maximize positive relationships with key donors.
Design and implement next-generation donor strategy.
Develop and implement culturally proficient donor engagement strategies to diversify support.
Design and implement ongoing plan for donor recognition.
Areas of Giving
Manage the Mental Health Center of Denver’s workplace giving campaign.
Ensure vitality of organization’s annual giving initiatives.
Work with Development team to promote fundraising efforts through social media.
Work with the Vice President of Development and Program leadership to cultivate and solicit major gifts.
Work with Vice President of Development to design and implement capital and other fundraising campaigns.
Implement and evaluate planned giving program according to organization’s Gift Acceptance Policy
Jointly plan strategic special events with Development team and program staff to introduce and cultivate diverse donors including: Gifts of Hope, Gifts of Joy, Colorado Gives Day, Well-Being Conference and Speaker Series.
Oversee the design and implementation of the information technology systems to support philanthropy including mobile communications technology and donor research software
Design, implement, and evaluate direct mail campaign.
Monitor and adhere to all organizational policies to ensure fiscal accountability; adhere to ethical requirements of fundraising professionals and ensure compliance with state and federal rules and regulations.
Oversee documentation of all gifts and contributions and preparation of acknowledgements to donors.
Oversee preparation of monthly and annual reports, monitor and advise on fundraising progress.
Participate in community activities related to nonprofit organizations and fundraising.
Participate in the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Colorado Planned Giving Roundtable.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education: Minimum BA / BS in Non-Profit Management, Marketing, Communications, Business, or Public Administration or related degree. Training at Benevon / Raising More Money 101 level or higher preferred. Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years experience in oversight and development of fundraising activities and/or non-profit management. Experience with health-related organizations or human services organizations preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge of professional ethics of fundraising
Knowledge of public policy issues affecting healthcare
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Public speaking, non-profit communication management experience strongly preferred.
Proficient use of information management software including MS Word, MS Excel, e-Tapestry
Demonstrated ability to engage and communicate effectively (oral and written) and develop relationships with people from all walks of life from both inside and outside the organization
Excellent project management skills; including high level of creative and strategic thinking; and the ability to motivate others
Ability to give, receive, and analyze information; formulate work plans, prepare written materials, articulate goals and action plans.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Development Officer for Philanthropy, volunteers. Work with consultants/ independent contractors.
MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT TO BE USED: Computers, calculators, fax machines, scanners, copiers, telephone and a variety of other office/clerical equipment.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires sitting, standing, bending and reaching. May require lifting up to 50 pounds. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office machines such as computers, fax machines, the telephone and other office equipment.
Typical Mental Demands: Ability to give, receive and analyze information, formulate work plans, prepare written materials and articulate goals and action plans. Must understand people from all walks of life and be able to communicate effectively with them.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Requires occasional evening, weekend, or on-call hours.
